大家好！it's been so long since i last blogged i almost forgot my username. but considering how its been a month since i've arrived in 上海, i decided it's time to share what i can about the Exchange Experience:

firstly, china does NOT block blogger/blogspot. but they do, however, block wordpress (and livejournal and bloglines).

secondly, all those tales about steaming hot delicious xiaolongbaos and tangbaos the size of your face being available at any random street corner and from any friendly street vendor are merely MYTHS. its been nearly a month and i can count the number of times i've eaten xiaolongbaos on one hand and none are experiences worth remembering.

thirdly, shanghai is a loveless society. just today, munloh and i were out on the streets when we saw an accident happen right in front of us. a motorcyclist skidded and fell onto the path of an oncoming SUV. the SUV driver, through a sublime piece of skillful driving, miraculously manages to jam on the brakes and stop just before he slams into the motorcyclist. then after stopping for a split second, the driver must have realised he has better things to do in life than stop and help someone he nearly killed so he proceeded to swerve around the motorcyclist (who is still lying on the floor futilely attempting to get his bike off his leg) and continue on his way while all other motorists behind him followed suit. tough luck man, we would have loved to help but unfortunately, mummy says no helping strangers in china.

fourthly, genuine DVDs are extinct so i guess the chinese aren't to blame for not owning the real thing. on the other hand, stores here have fully computerised systems where you can enter the title of any show and do a search on its availability in the store and its other branches - beat THAT jb pirates.

fifthly, uniqlo is EVIL.

sixthly, the ceramic pillows from the qing dynasty might be out of vogue now but guess what? they've been replaced with china mattresses so hard and uncomfortable i swear i can count the number of coils of spring just by lying flat out on it.

so i should think that sort of sums up the first month spent here. but i'm just nitpicking, it really isn't all that bad:

you know how when you look through a telescope everything which was far away initially suddenly seems so close you can almost actually touch and feel it? the building which was so distant and boring and grey suddenly seems so much more interesting upclose because now you get to see the people within the building. finally, you get to see all the activity within something that could have been so mechanical and you quickly realise theres a thousand different perspectives simply waiting for you to discover. this is what its like when somebody shoves you the telescope and forces your eye to it. even though you never wanted to look through it and see anything up close. because sometimes theres no need to look that closely and maybe this was just one of those times. there really was a kaleidoscope of colours and perspectives lying in wait for some brave soul to let curiousity and/or stupidity win the battle. and now this box can't seem to shut no matter how hard i force its lid down.

ok since i have nothing better to do while i wait at starbucks for cach the tardy pangsai, i might as well blog about the last few days of hols now that the first two days of school have ended. school is draining as usual, early morning lectures and trekking up the hill. trust me, trying to keep awake, pay attention and read blogs all the same time is no easy feat. especially when surviving on 5 hours of sleep. i must try to get my body clock back to school timing before i fall asleep while walking.

anyway, caifen's 21st was on the last sat before school started and she had her party in a hotel room on the 53rd floor of swissotel. but by the time i got there i was greeted by a very drunk birthday girl and her posse of extremely high friends who were all playing some funny card game involving embarrasing forfeits, all performed on the birthday girl. but because i'm such a stellar friend, i won't post any of the videos taken that night. but i shall post up this pic:

why do we always seem to make the decisions that we know right from the start will bring us into a dead end? it's as though we all have this weird innate mechanism within us that constantly keeps drawing us into traps we set ourselves, the same mechanism which drags us full speed through each route before we slam straight into a brick wall. a wall which we were so sure wasn't there before. or was it? the question of choice. whether or not we really do have the luxury of being able to choose where we want to go, what we want to do. if we really do have a choice, then why is it some choices are still made when it was so painfully obvious right from the start that they never should have been chosen? maybe its the illusion of choice. we are led to think that we have a choice, when in actual fact everything is predetermined and we are merely pawns in some warped game of snakes and ladders played by some more powerful, omniscient force. this "choice" we think we have, and the subsequent decision might already have been determined right from the start. so maybe there is no choice. and there is no other choice because all the others end up with me being right where i am right now, stuck and unable to move forwards.

we lost last night and its weird that somehow we all just accepted it so matter of factly. maybe its cos we already expected this outcome right from the start, we really were not ready for the season at all. the scoreline at the end was still hard to swallow, because it made it seem like we just rolled over and died, but it wasn't the case. the scoreline didn't reflect all the effort, hard work, tears, sweat that we put in for the past few months and even during the game itself. it is slightly disappointing that after everything, we had to lose in this manner. but then again, nothing else can be done to change the colour of our medals. i'm glad and relieved its all over and this time it will probably be the last time. so here's to the past 7 years.

this must be how it feels like when the feeling goes.

so friday was isaac's 22nd birthday and we kicked of his birthday celebrations by skipping company lecture and heading to brewerks for drinks in the afternoon. i'm surprised i managed to survive through training and 2.4 after all the golden ale we drank.

so tmr is the start of the 3rd week in school. time seriously flies la. but anywayy the past week has been same old, spent in the study room and bumming around at the summit, with some occasional out-of-the-blue events. like a picnic at the botanics! we're really living the oxbridge life over here in nus law, picnicing on wide grassy areas.

ok i should be sleeping considering i have to be in school in like 7 hours time. but i just can't stop watching justice and re-watching greys anatomy season 3! omg i am gonna watch tv shows till i fail everything this sem. and the last ep of greys is really damn damn tragic. and this really has to be the saddest thing you'll ever have to say to someone else.

been quite a busy few days, with fright night preparations, xiaowan's dinner and all. on fri we had our fright night dry run so we all had to be down to set up stations, cover up windows etc.

us being like banglas, climbing around trying to cover the windows with garbage bags.

sat was dinner at cach's. her mom cooked jap steamboat and i got asked over to help finish all the food. and i sabohed cach into doing the dishes and took incriminating pics of her. so in line with my constant mission to embarrass her, here are pics of her being a maid (limited edition, pls do not reproduce without permission. and you saw it here first.). hehhehh.

then on sunday it was xiaowan's farewell dinner at wine company! the little bowl is finally gonna grow up and be a doctor. hahah.

so the first week of unemployment is halfway through and so far its been quite enjoyable. its really quite shiok being able to wake up any time i want and not having to fight the morning crowd to get some standing space in the train and to start a whole day of acting like im doing work.

monday was spent in school with kwek, mok, ruizi and co. kwek made me teach him to fold paper stars so he could be a sweet and caring boyfriend. pictures below are evidence that every muscle man has a gentle side, the same side that makes them wanna fondle little kittens and small children. hahahah.

after gymming and nuahing about in sch watching rag practice, mok and i headed down to town where we proceeded to waste all the gym work by chionging the sakae buffet.

so friday was the LAST DAY OF WORK! omg i'm damn happy i don't have to wake up at like 630 anymore. after work hung around with jess before heading home to change before heading down to zouk. jiakkim was not as crowded as usual and we got to have our fair share of drinks so the night was quite good, despite my sticky jeans after all the spilt shots, ending with har cheong kais at sin hoi san.

today was the longest work day ever. for once i actually stayed ot and shocked myself with such employee of the year behaviour. and after today, i conclude that i'm not gonna make such a good lawyer after all. hurhur. i was stoning in front of my comp facebooking when some random associate caught me offguard and threw me research to do. so it wasn't until i started on it proper that i realised i didn't really know what she wanted so i had to go find her. but then i forgot how she looked like. so i had to go cubicle by cubicle like a retard trying to find who she was. and she overheard my frantic search and had to come out and tell me it was her actually. i think she prob couldn't believe r&t actually allowed such a goondu intern to come in :( and the worse part was, i took 3.5 gruelling hrs swimming through halsburys to tell her what she prob could have read off the companies act. omg i am hopeless i should quit and be a roadsweeper right now.

i realise i've known you for 7 years already! through sleeveless white uniforms, folded nanyang socks, toot haircuts (ok maybe this point only applicable to me), the overthrowing of chang tsai's regime, training sessions where we sang stupid songs and counted the lampposts during warmup runs, shit court and the don't-let-cheemay-get-the-ball game. and now here we are still in the same school. and instead of what we used to do, now its camping till late in school, frantic attempts to complete binder/memorial/crim mid-sem. omg i think we are really getting old. hahah.

ok enough nostalgia for now. des' birthday dinner was at waraku, where the tables have discreet rectangles cut underneath to deceive you into thinking you have to sit jap-style.

and look what mok and i saw at the riverside today while taking our break!

on a separate note, i finally finished reading harry potter today! the ending wasn't as good as what i had hoped. but at least all the loose ends got tied up and the people i hoped would live all survived. and i realise i grew up with harry potter! so i'm really quite sad its all over, but its been a good, entertaining and exciting 10 years :)

yesterday night was spent celebrating the last day of work of the week at holland v kopitiam, being the classy people that we are. cracking jokes about random situations and random people and making a whole lot of noise. now i can't wait for next fri where we can officially celebrate the LAST DAY OF INTERNSHIP! whoohoo. one more week to go!

woke up this morning and realised today's the 21st. meaning today is the day harry potter and the deathly hallows hits the stores! so i quickly got changed and quick-walked down to jurong east popular to queue and pick up my copy. damn excited now i must quickly blog finish so i can go read the last part of the half-blood prince to refresh my memory before i start on deathly hallows!! heh heh heh.

its been awhile since the last post. days have been slow-moving and boring because of work. at least i can take comfort in the fact that my wake-up-at-7am-and-sleep-by-1am days will come to an end by next thurs. this week has been spent doing nothing exceptionally exciting except the odd shopping trip and poker sessions at ruizi's. plus my trip to the school gym! physical exertion has become foreign to me after ivp season ended. i think i have not moved faster than walking pace except to chase for a bus. even then, i'm prob moving only at a quick walk pace. hahaha. i am clearly an invaluable asset to the nus netball team. hurhur. ok considering i have work tmr, i shall stop boring even myself with anymore mundane details of my life story. i'm up WAY past my bedtime so it's time to hit the sheets! :D

ok i am officially declaring that i hate work.
i am now sitting here surrounded by files and i hate that i am a bloody minion for even the clerks here. and everybody gives me their files to do, which i have no problem with actually. what i have a problem with is giving me word document after word document to edit the headers and footers. now i am wondering how the hell one can get employed as a clerk in a reputable law firm, when one cannot even do simple ms office stuff like that. not even html or like java programming or some cheem techie shit you know. it is just editing the fucking header and footer of a MS WORD document!!!! omg. i am going insane.

so one week has passed since law camp ended and work has been a bitch.
the only consolation each day is that one hour during lunchtime where i can stop pretending i'm doing work.
i realise this week has been so uneventful and boring i'm having trouble recalling what i did this past week. ok here goes, monday was spent catching fantastic four after work and i was seriously bored out of my wits by the show. sadly, alba wasn't even that hot in the show. thank goodness for the human torch and mister fantastic.

tuesday was shopping at gap with charlene, then poker at kt's place, with all of us fooling around with ian's new specs.

wednesday was og outing at marina bay for steamboat.

thursday was catching up time with dinolau, where she proceeded to send me home in her extremely retro car. i had a field day pressing the footbrake on the passenger side of the car (don't ask me why her car is built like a driving centre car).

finally, friday was spent waking up late, going to silver cross to get an mc, going to school to watch rag practice, then heading over to vishal's place for his house party.

ok 4 gruelling days of law camp are finally over! and it was, dare i say it, actually kinda fun. although we slept minimal hours and had to do all the stupid menial tasks to make sure everything was run right, and also i never knew so much work went into secret pals. looks are truly deceiving. but at least there was good company, late night mj/drinking sessions and supper every night to make it all so much more bearable. and making fun of the year1s was really surprisingly more fun than expected:)

week one of internship has finally come to an end.
never been so happy to survive till 530pm on a friday before. doing mundane work really kills all your brain cells. but at least there's internet in the office so i get to online shop, facebook and msn. i think i've prob spent more than i've earned this week. hurhur.

so popped by zouk for a short while on wed. weimin just got back from uk and he had been bugging all of us to go for mambo so i decided to be a good friend and drop by. but because of work early the next day i couldn't actually go in. plus the fact i overslept and was quite late in reaching, had to return the car by 130, and had no patience to queue to get in. hahah ok maybe i'm not such a good friend after all.

pics from that night are damn dark cos i bought this cover for my phone cos i always drop it in clubs and it was covering the cam's sensor or smth.

last night was spent at st james celebrating addy's 20th.
first time in at st james and it was really quite nice and spacious with good music.
plenty of drinks as well and we left the club with less ppl then when we came because some left early after deciding they'd had enough merlioning.
overall, it was all good fun and at least at the end, addy and i now have matching marks to remember the night by. hurhur.

first things first, the birthday girl being her usual charming self.
i duno how all the girls can keep their hands off her. even for me, everyday is a struggle.

i'm finally back from the 4 days in phuket/khao lak! and although maybe the food wasn't as satisfying as i hoped it would be, i had alot of fun under the sun and i'm glad we're all now extremely tanned! days were spent basking next to the pool reading our chick lits and drinking ice lemon tea or fooling around at the beach. the place is so nice i wouldn't mind retiring there next time. but then again its probably a little too much sun and sand for me.

addy told me today that her dad taught her a way of seeing if you have good gambler's luck. apparently you're supposed to count the number of strokes in your chinese name, excluding surname, and the number you get should not contain a 0 or is near a number that contains a 0.
